Since ancient times, there has been the saying that bee venom can cure all diseases. After drying bees in the sun, the stings are cut off and applied to the affected area along with the venom, or the live bee acupoint stinging method (bee stinger therapy) is directly used. This has a history of several thousand years. Traditional Chinese medicine was once at the forefront of the world in the application of bee venom, which was used to treat various diseases and achieved good results. Although it could preserve the active components in bee venom to the greatest extent, it could cause symptoms such as swelling, pain and allergies in patients. Moreover, the mixed components of bee venom were rather complex and its therapeutic effect was difficult to control, which made it impossible for live bee venom to be widely promoted and applied.
The development of bee therapy
However, the efficacy and clinical research of bee venom have not ceased. In the 1990s, breakthroughs were made in the pharmaceutical and clinical use of bee venom around the world. Melittin, which accounts for 60% of bee venom, has become a hot topic in bee venom research in recent years due to its excellent hemolytic properties. In 2002, a new anti-cancer drug mainly composed of melittin, developed by Australian scientists, has entered clinical trials. Studies have shown that bee venom contains certain enzymes and peptide substances, which have a certain anesthetic effect on organisms. The venom enzyme in snake venom has always been regarded as having good hemolytic properties, and the hemolytic property of melittin is even better - its molecule is small and easier to penetrate. Moreover, because it is an insect toxin, it is very safe.
Based on the exploration of the ancient bee needle therapy, our hospital developed an internationally leading electronic automatic bee venom collector in 1979. It was granted a national invention patent in 1988 and won the National Invention Award in 1996. This technology can collect high-purity bee venom without harming bees, further promoting the application of bee venom. In 1996, China's first provincial bee therapy hospital and research institute were established, and in 2001, a new bee therapy major was set up.
Divine bee Essence - The synthesis of bee venom and traditional Chinese medicine
The synthesis of bee venom for pharmaceuticals is a matter of great concern to the medical community both at home and abroad. However, the high activity of bee venom components poses significant challenges to synthetic pharmaceuticals - they are not easy to preserve. Once bee venom leaves the bee's body, its activity decreases, and some components may even volatilize. Meanwhile, the active ingredients contained in bee venom are extremely complex. To prepare a bee venom preparation, it is necessary to stabilize multiple highly active components within it, which is no easy task.
In 1992, Professor Miao Xiaoqing, the dean of the College of Apiculture at Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University who had been engaged in bee research for over 20 years, was injured in a car accident. A severe lumbar intervertebral disc protrusion left him bedridden. To fundamentally treat lumbar intervertebral disc protrusion, surgical methods are usually adopted. Patients often have to endure great pain, and surgical methods do not necessarily guarantee a 100% cure for the disease. Under the torment of illness, Professor Miao Xiaoqing decided to conduct experiments on herself. He combined bee venom with some traditional Chinese medicine and applied it to his waist, and it indeed had a very good effect. Professor Miao Xiaoqing also found that the active ingredients of bee venom remained unchanged for several days after being combined with traditional Chinese medicine. So, Professor Miao Xiaoqing began to experiment with bee venom and other traditional Chinese medicines in various ratios. Eventually, she successfully developed a bee venom medicine called "Shen Feng Jing", which has stable components and mutually reinforcing therapeutic effects. In one clinical trial after another, it achieved good results and cured many patients with lumbar intervertebral disc protrusion.
